According to Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, leadership is the set of characteristics that make a good leader. Meaning that leadership is occurred by the combination of several characteristics so that a leader can applied it in order to be a good leader for his/her organization. Leadership: The capacity and will to rally people to a common purpose together with the character that inspires confidence and trust (Field Marshal Montgomery). The supporter of the idea that characteristic is a base for a good leader is a quote from John Kenneth Galbraith, he says that “All of the great leaders have had one characteristic in common; it was the willingness to confront unequivocally the major anxiety of their people in their time. This, and not much else, is the essence of leadership.”
Rivai (2004) states that leadership is a process of affecting or giving model to the followers through communication process for attempting the organization’s goals/objectives. While Tannenbaum, Weschler & Massarik define leadership as interpersonal influence, exercised in a situation, and directed, through the communication process, toward the attainment of a specified goal or goals. Leadership may be considered as the process (act) of influencing the activities of an organized group in its efforts toward goal setting and goal achievement. (Stogdill, 1950). Another idea is given by Rauch & Behling, leadership is defined as the process of influencing the activities of an organized group toward goal achievement. To sum up, goal, objectives and achievement is a requisite part of leadership that cannot be separated. A leader will get difficulties in handling his/her organization if there is no a specific purposes.
From definitions above, it can be said that leadership is a process that requires some skills in order to give instructions for the followers to achieving the organization’s goals, objectives and purposes.
